Well, here we go!  It will be a while before I do too much more with this site until I get used to what I’m doing.  This is pretty provisional.

  1. Looks like you are off to a good start.

  2. Great new look. Personal. Nice. I like it.

Good article, too, on the inflation. I am still here in the US. We’ve been back and forth to Panama within the last six months, and can see clearly the increases. Of course, we come back here and the increases are happening too, but they aren’t as startling.

  3. Thanks for the comments–the site will be changing over the next little while until I have what I want with it. Or simply get bored with fiddling! :-)

As for price increases: I don’t pay that much attention, but I know that food price increases are not uniform. Eggs, for instance, have gone up about 17%. Not sure what rice has done lately, although the government has made subsidized rice available.

Another shock: yes, I knew that fertilizer prices had increased sharply. BUT. Nine months ago, maybe a little less, I bought a 100 lb bag of chemical fertilizer for something like $35 or $38, a huge increase from the last time I had bought it, at $25. I just bought another bag–$48.50. I almost choked.

I’m not at all fond of chemical fertilizers, and I’ll soon be off them. I have a good compost pile going, and in this climate, it won’t take long. Also, I’m finding out from my Panamanian friends where to get organic stuff.

One very serious limitation that Panamá has is that it has almost no manufacturing base of any kind. Which means that most of what the country consumes, except for agricultural products, is imported, with all that that means.

  4. Dear Joyce,
We love this new website, your house/land are so beautiful at the top of the page, here, as well as on the home page. This site allows easier response back to you, as well. Chicken breast here, in the Poteet, Texas area range from 1.99/lb., on sale, to $3.89 lb., for a comparison. We eat alot of chicken, it’s better for us, and not as costly as beef, etc.. Have a good evening, tell Mary and the critters hello.

Take care, glad you’re back online!,

  5. Hi, Linda and Clyde!

Glad you found and like the site. I’m still learning my way around WordPress but it’s getting easier all the time. It’s a lot more flexible than Blogger is.

The problem here is the difference in income. A really good daily wage is $15/day for skilled labor such as an electrician. $1/hr is still common for the kind of work that we pay Darío $1.50/hr–that’s very high for here. So the jump in prices here is staggering for most Panamanians.

But it’s good to know what’s happening in the US on the day-to-day, ordinary folks level.

Everyone here is fine–dinner just got served to the critters and they are quite happy! :-)

  6. Wow! I really admire you for making the move. I dread the thought myself.

The new blog is a VERY nice look. You must be happy with it — or will be soon if/when you finish the changes. I know how that goes. I tweaked little things that probably only one person in a thousand would even notice.

The photo at the top with the open gates — it’s like an invitation to come visit you in Panama. Nice touch.

  7. Hi, La Gringa!

I simply could not stand blogger any more. In fact, one of the reasons why I moved is that I was quite wistful every time I visited your site. I have no idea how you managed, with Blogger, to do the things you did, but clearly–CLEARLY–you have far more patience than I do and I was unwilling to spend the time learning. Not when I could get the features I wanted far more easily on WordPress.

Actually, it wasn’t all that hard moving, since I imported my files from WordPress. the worst that happened was that some formatting got lost, but that was the straw that broke the camel’s back for me–blogger gave me nothing but trouble yesterday, so in a fit of temper, I moved! the move was far, far easer than I thought it would be. Your site, of course, is much more complicated than mine was.

Overall, WordPress is much more user friendly than Blogger, although it has one feature that WordPress does not that is very nice–a “blogroll” that updates in the sidebar whenever there’s a new post. But I can live without it.
