Back to reality and the really important things in life:
Argentina beat Brasil in the men’s soccer semifinals! 3-0!!
Brasil is probably in national mourning.
Added on Wednesday:
I just went through the NY Times Interactive graphic on this game, and it’s clear that Argentina just totally outplayed Brasil. If my unimpressive memory serves me correctly, I do believe that the game I’m referring to, when Argentina beat Brasil, was for the last World Cup championship. I, who know more about statistics (and we know how little that is) than I do soccer–even I could see the the great Ronaldo was fat, slow and nearly irrelevant in that game.
After that game, heads rolled. There was a week of national anguish and inflamed introspection in the major news media.
The NY Times has an Inside The Rings video blog, and this morning I listened to the commentary about the game. Brasil had 27 fouls and 2 players ejected. That’s horrendous, by Brazilian standards. I haven’t read the Brasilian newspapers yet today, but I’m sure they have plenty to say.
Another exciting soccer game coming up tomorrow (wait–maybe today? not sure): Brasil vs US for the women’s gold medal!
You know, I may just have to start following soccer seriously.
Even later:
I just popped over to Folha de São Paulo to see if I could get the skinny on what’s being said in Brasil about Brasil’s humiliating show in yesterday’s soccer game against Argentina. The gold medal match will be between Argentina and Nigeria. So what did I see? One columnist headed his blog with “Now we’re all Nigerians”! I really had to laugh. There’s no love lost in any arena between Argentina and Brasil; soccer just allows everyone to vent legally.
